Carl Falsgraf was successful, respected, and well-paid in a job he loved. Then, shortly after turning fifty-five, he left it all and hit the road in a 1999 Toyota pickup. Forty-nine days meandering America’s backroads led to adventures, an intriguing cast of characters, and, ultimately, a profound sense of peace. This quintessentially American tale of loss and discovery takes the reader along on the journey of a lifetime.
Highway Blues eBook Carl Falsgraf
Aptly titled, "Highway Blues" tells a traveler's tale that mixes music into the telling, music rooted in the blues. Which is to say, music about living, about expressing a variety of feelings about living. Carl Falsgraf's memoir of a two month odyssey traversing the American West, the Midwest, and the Northeast is a compelling report filled with candor and humor. It is indeed a pilgrim's progress, detailing the experiences and attendant feelings of a man intent on taking stock of himself after leaving a full professional life and considering what might lie ahead. Falsgraf's Taylor guitar is his reliable companion (no poodle named Charlie for him), accompanying him in busking on the street, in developing songs he finds himself writing, in performing occasionally at small clubs along his route. Short anecdotal chapters are skillfully crafted to draw in the reader as Falsgraf makes his way across the American landscape, most often on two lane highways and in small towns. "Highway Blues" resonates with feeling and spirit, and may well make you want to reach for your own highway shoes.Product details

Highway Blues eBook Carl Falsgraf Reviews
Great book. I was fascinated by Carl's journey. I would love to do what he did, quit my job, see the USA and play music.
Falsgraf has done a great job in taking us along on his journey. His trip may have been a free-wandering trek across the country, but his style is careful and engaging, deliberate but never plodding. This is much more than a travel log, this is a memoir of a personal internal journey.
This book is beautifully written with an interesting memoir about a cross-country drive which deliberately has no destination. Falsgraf lives out the the back of his Toyota pickup playing his guitar and going places most people have never been. No tourist, Falsgraf has a great command of vocabulary and sentence structure as well as telling a great story.
Hurry, hurry, get you copy now (paperback or kindle)!! My soul-friend Carl Falsgraf has written a beautiful memoir, "Highway Blues", about hitting the road at 55. Not the speed, the age. It is an amazing, honest, very funny, serious, wise, observant piece of work. It's the kind of writing that makes me rededicate myself, yet again, to bringing as much honesty and poetry as I can to my own work. Bravo, Carl!

Humor, blues and scenery are woven into this deep look at a man's transition in life from one chapter to the next. The true story explores what success and happiness are really about and brings into question many of our cultural norms. The literal journey across the country has useful tips such as strategies for finding overnight parking, how to manage body fluids while living in a truck, and the odds and ends needed for an extended life on the road. The main theme is Carl's transition over several weeks from being the Director of a successful business to a travelling street musician. There are very personal moments that are touching and thought provoking. I look forward to more of Carl's writings and his wisdom.
Carl and I have a LOT in common - so I really related to this book, and enjoyed the heck out of it. Great read. Come along for the ride as Carl tries to lose himself and find himself. Very clever idea to make the music available online. I had fun following along in my Rand McNally US atlas as Carl crosses the country. Why not 5 stars? I found about 10 errors that could have easily been caught by a good proofreader (such as me). Recommended.
Highway Blues is a page-turner from beginning to end. Initially it appears to be a travelogue/memoir written by a heavily burdened and extremely successful man who has the courage to do what so many only dream of doing Let it all go and hit the open road with no particular destination in mind.
Somewhere in the Nevada desert it becomes clear that Carl's wry and sometimes acerbic observations and social/political commentary are merely window-dressing for what is a deep dive into the heart and soul of this man. His emotional and intellectual honesty is as breath taking as it is rare.
You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll think! You'll even sing the blues along with him as you find yourself immersed in Carl's beautifully written philosophical and soulful journey.
